AD – First of all, let’s ask whether the colour you choose for your bedroom, actually matters. Well, the answer is, yes it does. Colour has been proven to have an impact on our mood. And bedtime is such an essential time of the day. It’s important to ensure you get a restful sleep. Because sleep is so crucial in guaranteeing we can function in our daily lives.
Here are some things to consider when choosing a colour scheme for your bedroom:
How do you want your bedroom to make you feel?
Think about the times you settle down for a nap. Do you like to feel relaxed, and comforted? Are you a reader? Maybe you like to watch television or create things in your bedroom space. Using the power of your imagination.
Depending on how you would like to feel when you’re in the room, you need to consider how colours can impact your mood.
Consider how colour affects lighting
When choosing a paint colour or wallpaper for your bedroom, you need to consider how colour impacts lighting. Daylight bulbs and bright white light have a higher kelvin number and are a bit cooler in colour. Incandescent lighting intensifies warm colours, like red, orange and yellow. By contrast, it dulls cooler colours like blue.
Accessorise using colour
Before you purchase an expensive tin of paint. Maybe try some smaller additions, to test out whether you like the vibe.
Maybe you are unsure of which colour to use for your bedroom decor. Or you simply don’t have a strong enough preference. You need some inspiration. You could start off by using different coloured accessories around your room, to test out whether you like the mood it creates.
Whether it be curtains, a rug, or coloured furniture. Or a personalised cushion, positioned perfectly on a new colourful bedcover.
Use a colour wheel or tester pot
When choosing your accessories, if it’s curtains you have decided on, get a swatch of material to take home and test. It’s important to look at the material and how it will actually look in your bedroom. If you’re painting, get tester pots in all the colours you love. And spend time making the correct decision.
You will have to live in this newly decorated room for several years. It’s important to test, in order to eliminate some of the options you thought you might like. Be certain you have definitely made the correct decision. And that the right mood will be created for your home.
Consider the colour of your bed and headboard
We all know the advice – replace your bed every seven years! However, it is likely you may want to change your bedroom colour scheme several times within this period. If you have an existing bed you bought to match an old colour scheme, it’s important to think about how the colours of the room will impact the existing bed.
Consider the size of your room and use accent walls
Arranging colours or textures in a room can change the perspective. Essentially making the room appear wider, longer or taller. Darker colours can make the room appear closed and smaller. Lighter colours can make the space appear larger.
When picking an accent wall, ensure it is the focal point of the room. And, it’s also important to ensure the accent wall compliments and stands out from the other colours in the room.
Make it personal
You can spend hours in the local DIY store, looking at thousands of variations of the same paint colour. Not to mention that each paint brand usually has its own colour chart. Which can make the whole task more complicated. then it’s time to buy tester posts and research the benefits of each colour.
Regardless of the overwhelmed feeling this creates, or store assistants trying to sell their paint brand. Ultimately you need to ensure you are picking a colour you love. Something you are passionate about and that resonates. After all, you will be the only person sleeping in the room night after night.

Great post! When it comes to picking colours for our house, we try and think about what goes best with black so we can add that in in some way. This summer we’re focusing on getting the kitchen spruced up and, later in the summer, we’re repainting the living room with a deep navy. It’s going to be hard work but it needs done!

This plan sounds fab. The addition of navy will look so atmospheric. I was apprehensive about the darker green, but I really love it now.
I would love to be able to change the colours of my bedroom but as i rent my apartment that is not an option at the moment. If I ever do get to do this I am going to have such a great time picking something out — great tips; thank you!

You will have so much fun. We also rent, and it’s only recently that we’ve asked the landlord if we can decorate one wall. We will have to replace it with a neutral colour when we move though.
I definitely think of some of these when decorating now. I didn’t when I was younger and would put dark colours in my old room that was a darker space. These are some great recommendations of things to think about. Thank you for sharing.

I was the same when I was younger. I remember wanting a yellow and blue bedroom. With age, you start to research how the room will actually look.
Great points, it can be tricky when deciding a room colour! I decided on my bedroom colour quite quickly, but other people were unsure if it would clash with the tiger curtains – luckily it works and I love it 🙂 x

It’s really tricky to know what a colour will look like, with the other decor in the room. Glad it works well.
We’re in the process of decorating our house and our main bedroom has been the last to get decorated because it needed absolutely gutting (it was SO bad beforehand!) We’ve actually chosen a really *out there* design, something I would have NEVER considered before because it’s so different from what I’d usually choose (I’d usually go for neutrals, greens, maybe pink). But I’m excited to see how it looks.

This is so exciting. I was nervous doing our green wall, but the gamble totally paid off. Literally every person who sees it has lovely comments. I always steered away from darker colours before.
Good luck with the renovations and well done for all the hardwork so far.
Thank you for sharing this tips. It’s important to know your color theme for your bedroom. I always like my bedroom to be in cool colors like aqua or green.

Those colours sound lovely and relaxing!
I find judging how the paint would look in different lighting, including time of day, can probably be one of the hardest things to take into account when decorating a bedroom. I love DIY and experimenting with decor is fun.

It’s such a difficult thing to get right! But so important to spend time on this step.
Wonderful tips, especially noticing how the color impacts lighting. I love getting color samples and bringing them home to see how they’d look. These small steps make a big difference. Thanks for sharing!

They are such important steps to take.
Great tips! I’d love to change the colour scheme of our room but the blinds have blue on them so it’s quite restrictive!

Thank you. We also had to consider the other decor in the house.
Great tips! I’d love to re-do our colour scheme but our blinds have blue on them so we would have to get new ones if we changed the colour so I feel quite limited in what I can have.

Replacing blinds is a big job – so I feel your reluctance to change the colour scheme.
