I started documenting my motherhood journey in July 2021, following a difficult time in pregnancy and after experiencing some mental health challenges. I then transitioned into talking about working mum life.
As mums, we’re constantly told to “make time for ourselves,” but in those early years, it often feels impossible. Tonight, after finishing my skincare routine, I caught myself doing something I haven’t done in a long time — simply pausing. No noise. No rushing. Just a quiet moment to breathe after a busy day. Mum life really can take away your self-care moments.
It reminded me how far I’ve come in my motherhood journey, and why these small pockets of peace matter more than we realise.
The Reality of Early Mum Life – Why Finding Time for Yourself as a Mum Feels Impossible at First
When my daughter was little, I barely had time to shower, let alone enjoy a skincare routine. My days were a blur of feeding, nappies, sleepless nights, and constant multitasking. I loved those baby moments — the cuddles, the milestones, the softness of that season — but they were intense. Completely consuming.
If you’re a new mum reading this, you’re not doing anything wrong. It really is that demanding.

How Motherhood Changes as Your Child Grows
Now that my little girl is older, things look different. She’s becoming more independent. She plays by herself sometimes. She explores, imagines, and creates her own little world — and that independence is good for her development.
And it’s good for me too.
I used to feel guilty for wanting a break. Guilty for craving silence. Guilty for needing time to just be me. But I’ve learned that motherhood isn’t about losing yourself — it’s about evolving alongside your child.

Why Self‑Care Isn’t Selfish for Mums
Finding time for yourself isn’t selfish. It’s essential. When we pause, even for a few minutes, we reset. We breathe. We reconnect with the parts of ourselves that existed before motherhood — and the parts that have grown because of it.
These moments:
- Reduce stress
- Improve emotional wellbeing
- Help us show up as calmer, more present parents
- Model healthy boundaries and independence for our children
A few minutes of skincare might not seem like much, but it’s a symbol of something bigger: reclaiming space in your own life.
A Message for Mums in the Thick of It
If you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or wondering when you’ll ever get a moment to yourself, I promise — it gets better. Not because you magically find more hours in the day, but because your child grows, and so do you.
You will get pockets of peace again.
You will rediscover yourself.
You will find your rhythm.
And when you do, those tiny moments — like a quiet skincare routine at the end of the day — will feel like a breath of fresh air.

Embracing Every Chapter of Motherhood
Motherhood isn’t one chapter. It’s a whole book. Some pages are messy, some are magical, and some are a mix of both. But each stage brings something new — new challenges, new joys, new opportunities to grow.
So here’s to the mums taking a moment.
Here’s to the ones still waiting for theirs.
And here’s to embracing every version of ourselves along the way.
