I hope this post will allow you to get to know me better.
Because I struggle with control issues, due to my anxiety, I’ve realised my love of baking is possibly about a total loss of control: causing mess, chaos and the final outcome is always uncertain!
Maybe I just need some time to completely switch off and let go. I think my mind is glad of the rest. I enjoy the process and get seriously creative with ingredients and decoration.
In my real life I like everything in order, lists are my best friend. But when I bake, I don’t stick to recipes, I’ve tried many vegan alternatives in the past.

I just love experimenting.
It’s time for me to tell you all about my baking journey…
I firstly need to explain I believe I’ve Inherited this talent. About 5 years ago I gave it a try and was strangely amazing at baking. Even down to the small details. I would randomly know when my items were baked without setting a timer, and self-taught decoration tips very quickly, using YouTube videos.
For years I was on a mission to practice my skills by baking for every occasion I could. The only problem with baking as a hobby, or attempting to turn it into more, is you need a lot of time. Which I don’t usually have!
There is also a lot of debate about whether turning a hobby into a full-time job is beneficial, or whether you would take the joy you experience away from it. I find baking therapeutic, but would I still find it therapeutic if it was my main source of income? Here at some tips, if you feel like becoming a pro-baker. I decided a while ago, it’s something I want to do for fun.
Someone say The Great British Bake Off??
There was talk of me applying for GBBO at one point and I actually read through the application and almost started practicing. Imagine that! Maybe one day.
I’ve even experimented with ingredients and the science behind a baked product. I don’t need weighing scales and I’ve substituted a lot of components to focus on healthy baking or using cheaper ingredients.
Why I stopped baking
It’s difficult to gauge exactly when and why I stopped baking. I previously booked annual leave from work to make amazing creations for family members’ special occasions. Maybe it was my all-or-nothing mindset, telling me if I couldn’t make something fantastic there was no point.
Then life got in the way. The lead-up to my recent breakdown meant I struggled to find time to do anything enjoyable in life. I listened to my anxiety brain and told myself there was no time for baking or anything else I enjoyed in life for that matter. I’ve said goodbye to the negative thoughts now and you can read more about that here.
Has the baking spark come back?
Since my breakdown, I’ve made an effort to bake, in order to restore some part of my sanity, which was lost in this whole sorry mess.
It made me feel whole again and took my mind off the severe anxiety I was experiencing. I enjoyed giving out the baked goods and sending them to family and friends. This was one of the main motivations for baking in the first place. You can check out the other techniques I used to recover from my breakdown here.
Who made the cakes during my hiatus?
During my hiatus from baking, there were times I needed baked goods for special occasions but just couldn’t bring myself to be the baker of these items. The thought of it made me stressed, instead of excited.
For these times, I enlisted the help of online sellers. I ordered a tray of brownies for my partner’s 30th birthday and put them on a very expensive cake stand. This is his fave dessert so they went down a treat! I think they were all gone within an hour. Lesson learned. Next time I will hide the baked goods until later in the party. I think he managed to squirrel some away before the party-goers descended. He isn’t the sharing desserts type, haha!
Where should I seek out these brownie sellers, you ask?
For those times you’re just not feeling creative, need something as a gift or treat for a friend, or just want a Saturday night in and a box of brownies (no judgment here), look no further….
Today I need to tell you about Bake Me A Gift. They are offering 10% off your first order, using code: AF2110. Valid until: 31st Dec 2021.
Grab your brownies here and make someone happy this Christmas!
For the times I simply can’t be bothered to bake, or I’ve got my fill of self-care elsewhere, online brownies will be my only option.
Final thoughts
Are you a bake-off potential candidate or maybe never baked anything before? I would love to hear your stories in the comments below…
Ohhhh I didn’t realise you love baking! I applied for Bake Off years ago and of course, I made a mess of it haha! You should definitely apply – it’s a fun process!
Aww wow, that’s amazing to hear. I might just apply, life is too short to think ‘what if’!
Life gets us sometimes and make us stop doing what we love to do. I hope you doing good from the breakdown though. Baking is fun if there is time to do it.
I am doing a lot better now, thank you. Baking is fun and I need to do some more of it soon. Maybe create some Christmas treats.
Oh, it would be so cool to be on Bake Off! I low-key would love to do that, but I’m nowhere near good enough. Baking can be so lovely, but like yourself, it’s something that did slip away from me when I wasn’t feeling my best. I’m slowly getting there, I hope you have some fun with baking again soon x
I feel exactly the same. The contestants know their stuff. I would need to quit working for a while to perfect my skills and that’s probably never going to happen!
I am glad to hear you’re slowly getting there. I hope you have fun baking soon as well 🙂
I used to bake a lot before, I can’t remember why I stopped but I did and I’ve been struggling to get back since. I love baking too. It’s fun
It’s so much fun. The same thing happened to me, I just wasn’t interested or maybe didn’t prioritise it anymore.
Great post! I share similar feelings for baking and have done it professionally at one point, I find it therapeutic now there’s no stress meeting deadlines for orders but I definitely switch between hobbies so I’m nowhere near as good anymore! Thanks for sharing
Wow, that’s amazing you’ve done it professionally. I think it’s better just kept as a hobby. Less stress involved.
Fantastic post! Thank you for sharing this fantastic insight into your life and hobbies 🙂 I love baking, although I’m not very good at it x
It doesn’t matter if you’re not great at it, it’s still fun.
Some of my creations still don’t turn out great, but it’s all part of the fun. I think I thrive on problem-solving and getting it right the second time around, haha!
Thank you so much for sharing your story! it’s so refreshing to hear that baking helped you so much and love that you take time to bake for your loved ones! x
I love baking for everyone else. By the time I’ve eaten the leftovers (has to be done), all I want to do is give away the baked goods.
Thank you so much for sharing your passion with all of us! Baking is definitely one of my favorite ways to connect with my children and the people I love. But sometimes life gets busy and it is more stressful to bake than to not. Life is a very delicate balancing act and you have to learn to allow yourself the grace to get off balance sometimes knowing that you can find your way back.
I totally agree with all of this. I just never have time to do everything I want to do, but it’s time to accept that and work around it.
I love that you are so passionate about baking and how it helps you with anxiety. Thank you for sharing your story and experience. There really is nothing like home baked goods. Yummy.

Thank you and I totally agree, there is nothing like it!
I think it is lovely that you have found that baking allows you to switch off and let go.
It is amazing that you randomly know when your items are baked. I have a habit of hovering around the oven when baking in fear that my food will burn. 😂
It would be fantastic if you were on GBBO one day. I completely understand the all-or-nothing mindset. I am glad baking again could make you feel whole, and it took your mind off other things. My partner loves brownies as well, and he isn’t the desserts sharing type either. 😂
I am alright at baking, but it takes me a lot of effort to get it right. Thank you for sharing this post! 😊
I want to do some baking now. You will know what it feels like to have no sweet stuff in the house then because it all gets eaten? I go to get a cup of tea and there are no biscuits left, haha!
It’s goo that you have something you can turn to when you need it, and that you can return to even after time away from it for a while. I enjoy baking but don’t do it as much as I would like to; I should really get back into it as I find it helps to distract/relax me a bit — I just dislike the washing up, haha!
The washing up is a nightmare. All the butter sticks to everything! I am usually a clean and tidy person, but cannot avoid mess when baking.
Baking is such a stress release for me to be honest. Keep baking & enjoy baking!
I am glad you all enjoy it. I will keep baking and I WILL find the time from now on.
I envy people who can bake, I’m not a natural baker like yourself, so I tend to buy in, it’s safer that way. Why not give yourself the challenge of bake-off, it sounds as though you would be perfect for it. Thanks for sharing a wonderful post.
The thought of applying is scary, but I’m in the best mindset I’ve probably ever been in. See what happens…
If you love baking, keep at it. You can make the Bake Off.
Thank you for your encouragement.
1st, great post!!! I have to admit I love trying new things. And as soon as I know I can do it, I stop practicing it. It also doesn’t help that I want to do all…. I always say I am a Jack of all trades but a master of none
This is a great way to be because you try anything. I am the same, want to do everything but never enough time.
