6 Amazing Reasons to Book a Holiday at Southview Holiday Retreat, Middlesborough

Welcome to my post, all about Southview Holiday Retreat, Middlesborough.

Who else loves the quiet life? The strong need to get away from the hustle and bustle. Switch off your phone and just relax.

As a family, we have busy lives, between working full time, school admin, childcare and fitting in precious time to make family memories and have fun. Sometimes it’s just necessary to switch off completely.

Making a holiday booking with a lack of reviews

I’ve talked in my previous review blog posts about reading reviews before booking a holiday, a meal or visiting somewhere. You can usually tell the fair reviews from the people who just want to have a rant. Check out my Places to Eat reviews below:

The Craft House in Bingley – Is It Worth a Visit?

My Review of The Old Bridge Cafe In Skipton

The Noble Comb Hungry Horse Pub in Shipley – MCA Review

However, sometimes you need to take a chance on a holiday venue when they have just set up and are brand new. When we booked this holiday through Hoseasons, there were only a few reviews added. As such, we had to take that chance.

We are here now

I want to visit places myself before bringing you reviews. We are currently on site now and these are my comments about the place:

Accommodation & value for money – We are staying in The Wainstones pod, which is slightly more roomy than the standard one.

Surroundings – absolutely beautiful & breathtaking views.

Service – friendly, checking in with us but not disturbing our peace.

Nearby places to visit – Stokesley. Great Ayton, Whitby, Middlesborough.

Relaxation factor – 100% relaxation, even with a fiver-year-old.

A base for visiting other places – the perfect base for venturing out and about each day.

I am going into a lot more detail below, so keep reading about the 6 Amazing Reasons to Book a Holiday at Southview Holiday Retreat, Middlesborough

Accommodation & value for money

The accommodation is what sold the holiday to us, in the first place. We paid £399.00 when booking direct through Hoseasons. And only paid a £10.00 deposit. Booking in advance allowed us to pay the holiday off in chunks. I didn’t think this price was bad, considering we have a Monday-Friday stay, the first week of the UK school summer holidays AND the addition of the hot tub and amazing view.

We had everything we needed in the pod. A small kitchen area, without an oven, but other amenities such as a microwave, hob, kettle and toaster.

Southview Holiday Retreat, Middlesborough

We managed to make some lovely homemade meals, like spaghetti bolognese. And even managed a full fry-up, to make fry-up wraps!

Surroundings

The pod overlooks the Cleveland Hills and as you can see from the pictures below, the view is stunning, breathtaking, and relaxing and it’s amazing to overlook this every morning. We decided to spend our last day mostly hanging around the accommodation, so we can live in the moment and enjoy this beautiful view.

Service

The site is run by a father and son team and from the first text message, to get instructions for how to enter the accommodation, they were lovely and friendly.

The instructions for staying were comprehensive and provided all the information we needed. And the friendly visits, stopping by our pod to check if we had everything we needed, were one of the highlights of our holiday. The little one loved saying hello!

Nearby places to visit

As a family, we purposefully book places to stay, where we can use them as a base to explore the area. And this time we took the opportunity to reinstate our English Heritage Membership and visit some amazing places on the way here and during our stay.

A few of the nearby places you can visit during your stay:

Stokesley – this is a market town, with a coop, bakers, lots of pubs, bistros and other amenities. We visited to grab some lunch at the local bakers and food supplies from the coop.

I would say that from what we experienced, the town isn’t geared towards families and children. Eating-wise we would have been looking at overpriced bistros (I say this because our five-year-old simply wouldn’t eat the food there) or pubs with strange service times or that don’t allow children. As a couple, we would have loved a village like this. But luckily we were able to grab some food and return to our accommodation to chill out in the hot tub.

I will say there are lots of amazing shops for little ones. Boutique-style clothing and toys for young ones. We loved exploring the array of charity shops – we even picked up some bargains, including a branded walking coat for my little one and a nice dress for me.

Great Ayton – This is a picturesque small village, which we passed through on our way to Whitby. All the details you need about the amenities available can be found here.

Helmsley – we passed through Helmsley on our way here and decided to revisit the town the following day, to make use of our English Heritage membership and visit the castle.

Helmsley Castle

It’s a lovely Yorkshire town, with shops, a beautiful square and lots of cafes and pubs along the river. We had a great time walking around the town, after our trip around the castle.

Relaxation factor

This trip was 100% relaxation from the first moment we arrived. Absolutely beautiful views. An enclosed garden was a must for the little one. It also came in handy when one of us wanted a rest in the afternoon, the other people could use the patio to chill outside and provide some much-needed space, away from one another. The small balcony out to the front of the pod also provided another space for someone to relax in.

A base for visiting other places

In terms of distance, staying here is a great base for visiting other places. You have the choice of nearby market towns, which are up to about a 30-minute drive. Some are just 5 minutes down the road, in a car.

Whitby

The longest drive we did was Whitby for the day. The picturesque seaside town was busy and we were tired after the trip but we got to see our favourite seaside town, without the price tag of staying in a £300.00 a night hotel in the centre of Whitby.

It was about a 49-minute drive to Whitby from the accommodation.

One of the main reasons we visited Whitby was to take our little one to Whitby Abbey. As a couple we have visited a few times, but it was time to introduce her to the amazing views and history. She loved running around and taking pictures.

Whispa and the Waves by Ffion Jones and Elena Mascolo – MCA Review

Inspired by a desire to help her daughter in her struggle with anxiety, Whispa and the Waves is a book that hopes to help children explore other ways of responding to these feelings, empowering them to overcome the waves and giving them the strength to calm the storm.

Important topics in the public eye right now

If you follow my blog, you will know that a mental breakdown is what prompted me to start this blog, to help other people feel less alone when they are experiencing mental health challenges.

The mental health crisis amongst young people in the UK at the moment is well documented and something we should all be eager to resolve. Books like this – serve to educate young people and make them feel less alone. In this respect, we must share this book’s message far and wide.

Children having access to books

Another well-documented fact is that some children living in the UK currently don’t have access to books at home. As a family, we have always purchased books, mostly from charity shops. But my little one loves reading and we must make time to read books with her. Even though, like most families, family time is limited.

Exploring big emotions with children

The character in the book sounds very much like me. I still use my hypnotherapy recordings when I feel life becoming too much. These days, I feel more resilient and able to deal with the pressures and unexpected events life can sometimes throw at us. BUT it’s taken a lot of work to get to where I am now.

Imagine being a child. Research tells us can’t regulate emotions in the way an adult does. And still feeling some big emotions you may not understand. Books like this are vital in helping children have a visual display and a story to tell about a similar way they are feeling.

I’ve written on my blog before about handling toddler emotions. You can check out the posts below:

Stand-up Paddleboarding in the Lake District – Jo Moseley – MCA review

Welcome to my post about Paddleboarding in the Lake District. My review of Jo Moseley’s second book, with stunning images and helpful information to get started.

I previously reviewed Jo’s last book Stand-up Paddleboarding in Great Britain: Beautiful Places to Paddleboard in England, Scotland & Wales – you can read the full review and buy the book in the post below:

Jo’s background and why it matters

If you’ve read any previous posts on this blog or viewed my social media accounts, you will know I am a huge fan of rising from the ashes after facing adversity. It’s how this blog was born! And I encourage everyone else to change their situation for the better – when they can.

Jo’s backstory is one of adversity, followed by a growing passion for exercise, which became some of the most amazing achievements.

In May 2013, I found myself sobbing in the biscuit aisle of Tesco’s, looking at the chocolate Hob Nobs and wondering how my life had come to this. I was 48, a busy working Mum, flying solo with my boys.

Both my parents were undergoing chemotherapy at the time and I was overwhelmed, anxious and desperate for a good night’s sleep. What I didn’t realise was that I was going through the early stages of the perimenopause at the time.

Quote from Jo Moseley

How I can relate to this

“You’re never too old to do something wild and it’s never too late to make a difference.”

Jomoseley.com

I can relate to this quote. At nearly 40 years old, I finally feel the most confident and free I ever have. But it’s been many years of adversity in the making.

Paddleboarding in the Lake District

My review of the book – Stand-up Paddleboarding in the Lake District – Jo Moseley

I pride myself on being organised, and what I love about Jo’s book is the detail. You will find coordinates on specific places you can set off on your paddleboard. When reading, you can be safe knowing Jo has already done it and therefore, you are safe.

You can easily use the book as a guide. Like a map. If you’re visiting a specific part of the Lake District and you are taking your paddleboard along, you can be sure there will be instructions on how you set off on your paddleboard and experience the freeing feeling of nature.

PLEASE SEE A SUMMARY OF MY RECENT BLOG POSTS

How to get started

I love this section of the book because it is filled with honesty about how to get started. When we start a new hobby, we often default to buying things, but Jo suggests starting with paddleboarding lessons to see how you like the activity.

From a confidence perspective, I love that this section exists. Often when you start a new physical activity, confidence and knowing how to start are the two most important things. The things that would literally stop you from completing the first step. This section of the book reduces the fear and anxiety you can experience when deciding to try something new.

You can check out my other blogs here. And I write about my love of running on the Roaring Pumpkin blog.

Where to park, eat and drink

Aren’t these the most important aspects of any trip? Where to get your snacks – much-needed fuel for any exercise and parking or where to stay in a hotel, is the most vital information. And it’s the first thing I look at when planning my trip. It’s great that Jo includes these all important details in the book.

The photos

For anyone who has visited The Lakes before, you will know the images are simply stunning. And the photos included in Jo’s book are a joy to look at.

In the images, she looks so happy and free and these images inspire anyone wanting to try paddleboarding.

5 Reasons Playing Simple Games Relaxes Your Mind

Please note – this is a collaborative post

Playing Simple Games Relaxes Your Mind

If you also need some relaxation, join me on a journey to finding a mindless, enjoyable task, where you can focus your attention for a while and switch off.

Sam – Founder – Mummy Conquering Anxiety Blog

If you’re new around here and haven’t followed the journey, from the creation of my blog to now, then you might not know I am a constantly busy person who is prone to burnout.

As a busy mum, working out the school schedule, swimming lessons and appointments for a five-year-old is a job in itself. Let alone working and managing everything else in life.

I find it difficult to switch off, but these days I force myself to let my mind relax. And playing simple games, that you don’t have to think about, help me to do that!

If you also need some relaxation, join me on a journey to finding a mindless, enjoyable task, where you can focus your attention for a while and switch off.

A Creative Outlet

As a creative person myself, someones I am not always in the mood for writing a full blog post and frankly, sometimes I just don’t have the brain power for an in-depth task. But, it’s nice to display your creativity in ways that don’t exert too much energy or time.

Games like Minecraft and The Sims can allow you to build a whole world for yourself, just the way you imagined. And we all know how powerful imagination can be, not just for kids but also for adults.

Games help create a flow state

One of the main tools I use to manage low periods of mental health is hypnotherapy and meditation. Games can also help create a flow state, similar to mediation. Where you are awake, but your mind is focused on one task. You are essentially switching off your logical brain. And using the creative, imaginative side of the brain.

Games are rewarding

We all know that social networks gear their algorithms around the brain reward system. The same applies to online games. Winning or making progress in a game can trigger this chemical process in our brains. And it allows us to feel a sense of achievement.

Games allow you to destress from the day

In the world of work, we often face an 8-10 hour day of mostly focusing on work-related tasks or the stresses that come along with employment. After using our brains constantly for this period, we must have a de-stress technique, to almost get our mind out of work mode. A recent study found that mobile phone games can help you recover from a long workday, in the same way mindfulness apps work.

Games help decision making & problem solving

Sometimes part of the fun is losing or getting it wrong. And the sense of achievement you feel when you finally crack the game is immense. Games can help us improve our decision-making and problem-solving skills, by ultimately going through a process to win the game.

Within an online game, feedback is immediate. So if you lose, you can quickly change your decision-making to enable you to achieve your desired result the next time you play.

Playing Simple Games Relaxes Your Mind

REMEMBER – Playing Simple Games Relaxes Your Mind. I want to share some of the recent games I played and why I loved them.

cashier simulator

Playing Simple Games Relaxes Your Mind

I loved playing the cashier simulator game because it allowed me to complete really basic calculations in a fun way. Almost powering down my brain, to allow me to perform with minimal effort required.

And I found the task enjoyable. The music was relaxing and this is even something I could play with my little girl.

cash back

Playing Simple Games Relaxes Your Mind

I loved the interface of cash back. When visiting the home screen, the game is colourful and attractive.

It was also great to use the buttons to increase the amounts you give to the characters as cash back.

The tally at the bottom which counted sales was also great.

Mind.org.uk has a page recommending some puzzles and games you can use to help you distract yourself. Check out the page here.

Lego City adventures – build and protect

Lego game

I actually got really distracted with Lego City adventures – build and protect – because I loved it so much.

It gave me The Sims vibes, where you helped build a city and reveal the bricks.

I will be playing this one on my own to destress and probably with the little one.

Want to keep reading about this topic? Why not check out WebMD and their great reasons that playing games can help your mental health?

Hidden Food

Me and the little one were literally shouting at the screen while playing Hidden Food. We loved spotting the foods in the massive pile.

Think Where’s Wally but in the kitchen. This will now be one of our favourite phone games.

Welcome to My review of The Old Bridge Cafe In Skipton.

The hubby and I recently had some time to visit Skipton town centre. I hadn’t slept well the night before and just wanted a place to sit down and feel homely. Like many other people, we usually opt for Wetherspoons, because you know what you’re getting food-wise.

I wanted to introduce you all to this little gem of a cafe that we found and tell you about our yummy breakfasts! Just check out the picture below – it was also a lovely hot drink.

What did we eat

I know you all want to get stuck into the good stuff. The food we ate when we visited and what we had to drink.

The fry-up was lovely. The main selling point was the sausage, which was obviously sourced locally. And it was lovely toast with a great cup of tea to accompany the meal.

Seating

When you first walk into the cafe, it can be a little daunting if the downstairs is full. But there is plenty of seating upstairs and we were pretty much left alone up there the whole time we ate, which was relaxing.

There is also a small outside area to the cafe’s rear, so alfresco dining if you fancy it.

Summary

I can’t wait to take my little one back for some grub. We know she would be fine sitting upstairs and I am sure she will love the food, just like we did.
