Why financial worries can impact your mental health

My experience

When it comes to financial worries, I’d never had to worry until recently. I’d always considered myself financially savvy. I spent my career in the Finance industry and was always up to date with my knowledge of the financial world. Therefore managing our household finances was always something that came top of my priority list.

I’m also quite an organised person. I enjoyed taking control of our finances and seeing the results when we paid into our savings account and made overpayments on loans and credit cards. Doing this gives you a good feeling.

It’s easy managing money when you’re single, have a fantastic career, or are a couple living it up and enjoying life. We went on holidays to Mexico, and regular weekends away, for cocktails and shopping and never really worried about money.

On a serious note, the fact we were over-committed for at least a year, made me feel personally like a failure. I would dread letters coming through the post, saying bills hadn’t been paid. I would long for the day when we had a little more money each month and I could finally pay people back and take some control of the finances again.

Things changed when we had a child. There was less money to go around and this created problems. It isn’t having a child that costs more money, it’s the upheaval and adjustment period that bit us in the backside.

On a serious note, the fact we were over-committed for at least a year, made me feel personally like a failure. I would dread letters coming through the post, saying bills hadn’t been paid. I would long for the day when we had a little more money each month and I could finally pay people back and take some control of the finances again.

Why financial worries impact mental health

Mind.org have a great diagram which explains the vicious cycle. You worry about money, which results in poor mental health and vice versa. This article also provides useful information on the topic. Having lived through it, I can say it’s completely correct.

I never imagined, following a breakdown from workplace stress, that I would struggle to manage money. But I struggled to do anything when I was first off work. I will talk more about the impact of anxiety in this post. One of my last anxiety-filled days was caused as a result of money worries.

It’s a lot more admin when automatic payments are not made due to lack of money and you have to start contacting individual companies to agree when payment will be made. This extra admin didn’t help my mental health at all. I can see why people refer to companies like StepChange to act on their behalf. Speaking to 10 individual companies becomes too much.

These are the things I wish I’d done in hindsight

I saved money during my pregnancy and six months full pay period

Planning for maternity leave would have alleviated some financial worries. We didn’t save in advance and as you can imagine, we struggled from months 6 to 9 of maternity leave, on less than a third of my total wage. We still had the same bills to pay though. Luckily, our family helped us out with these payments. However, it made the whole experience of still being off work a bit grim and less enjoyable than it should have been.

Saved towards nursery costs

The nursery wanted a deposit payment upfront and we secured the place before our little one was born (we all know about competition for nursery places!).

The monthly costs involved with childcare are high in the UK and we were only sending her two days a week initially. To ensure we didn’t have financial worries about this monthly cost, I wish we had saved some money to add to the childcare account to make advance payments or act as a buffer for months when we struggled to meet the full payment.

You don’t need financial worries about the nursery when you already have the stress of arranging childcare, worrying about sick days and who can cover them, or whether they have the right coat to play out in. There is enough to think about!

Refrained from using credit cards

The credit card balances were relatively under control before my maternity leave.

During this period, we kept living as we had before, but in fact, we now have other costs to consider (baby milk, baby clothes, the latest gadgets etc). This additional pressure caused us financial worries over some time, as the credit card balances increased, along with the interest and we still had the same level of money coming in.

Given my post-pregnancy mental health struggles, it felt good to get out of the house, have a nice lunch, a few drinks at the weekend and spend money. This wasn’t a great path to go down and in hindsight. If we have another child, I will find cost-effective ways of connecting with other people during maternity leave.

At the time, I wasn’t in a great headspace to connect and share my experiences with others. I am now.

Live and learn!

Accepted the situation sooner

Due to my poor mental health post-pregnancy, I used a lot of avoidance techniques. Alcohol mainly! And kind of ignoring some of my responsibilities. One of the factors was money management. I was living in the moment and trying to heal myself.

What I’ve learned is, that planning for the future is great in some areas, like finances. Had we planned, some of the anxiety caused by financial worries could have been avoided.

Planned for a rainy day

I bet we’ve all used this phrase many times but never thought it would signify a pandemic was looming. Several UK lockdowns worry about job security and a toilet roll shortage.

I am aware some people experienced all manner of hardships during the lockdown and I feel grateful we kept our jobs throughout. On top of this, there were those unexpected family losses and people having to find money to pay for things they never dreamed they would need to, such as funeral costs and Bronze Grave Markers, which impacted so many people when the country was already struggling.

Uncertain times

We did have our ups and downs though. Nursery closing, isolation periods, working from home and getting pinged on the app, all of which impacted our finances in some way and generally made us feel completely out of control. We didn’t know what was coming next. Honestly, you never know what will happen. One day, things are going well, and the next day, you’re unexpectedly having to make funeral plans and pay for the death of a loved one. You never know what might happen.

Suddenly, we had to plan for the next time my hubby would be off work for a week isolating, or the nursery would get a COVID case and close. All of these factors impacted our income and caused financial worries.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, overcommitting has led to huge anxiety issues over finances. I am the organised one and therefore I take control of the family finances. During this period of difficulty, I would find myself constantly doing all of the below:

  • Checking my banking app daily, or even hourly
  • Worrying about asking to borrow money from family and felt like I was a failure for doing so
  • Felt inadequate, like I was incapable of managing our family’s money
  • Lack of security – how would we pay bills, manage to buy food

Interestingly, the Money & Pensions Service released this article about people being ashamed to talk about money. I do think there needs to be financial education introduced in schools because it isn’t always something you learn growing up. This might just be because your family members are private people, but how do you then know as an adult how to manage money.

If you are struggling financially

Please talk to someone if you’re able to. I have done this recently and it has eased some financial pressure. I now feel more in control of our finances.

Here are some charities that can help if you’re struggling:

Parenting: Preparing Your Kids for a Brighter Future

GUEST POSTread to the end for the author’s bio

Being a parent is challenging, especially when it comes to raising kids. As the world evolves, you want your kids to be ready for the outside world when they become adults. You want them to be strong, enough to adapt to the complex landscape, technological advancement, and unforeseen challenges. As parents, you want the next generation to have the skills, mindset, and resilience to thrive in an uncertain future. If they can grow up feeling brave no matter their situation, you have done your job.

Let’s dive into Parenting: Preparing Your Kids for a Brighter Future

Here are some things you should look out for when Preparing Your Kids for a Brighter Future

How to Secure Your Kids’ Future

Effective Communication

Communication is a difficult skill to master since adults struggle to master it, too. Without communication, you can’t understand the other person’s thoughts or wants. Kids are always curious more than adults, so you want to teach them how to express themselves clearly, actively listen, and collaborate with others. Without communication, how can your kids have good relationships with others? The reason why relationships are difficult to handle is because of poor communication skills. Raise your kids to express their thoughts confidently.

Embrace Challenges

Life isn’t perfect. There are many challenges and obstacles in life. As parents, you need to prepare your kids for the unknown future. You want your kids to be strong and face those challenges head-on. Help them see that a challenge is an exciting opportunity rather than something daunting. Even if they fail, you should cheer them on or encourage them that there will be a next time as the parent. By doing so, your kids can tackle a new and unfamiliar task in the future. This will help them to have a positive mindset and be problem solvers.

Independence and Responsibility

Part of Preparing Your Kids for a Brighter Future is nurturing learning and growing, so you want to give them simple tasks to learn from. You can give them simple chores like making the bed, wiping the table, or folding clothes. Giving them age-appropriate chores will instil a sense of responsibility and independence. Slowly, you can give them difficult tasks to do so they can have strong work ethic and the ability to manage tasks effectively. If you spoil them all the time, they will never know what independence and responsibility is when they are adult.

Lifelong Learning

Most kids grow up thinking they don’t need to learn anymore after school. However, life is a journey full of the unknown. Your kids won’t know everything all the time. You want your kids always to be curious and keep questioning things about the world. Learning is not just confined to the classroom but a lifelong pursuit. Encourage your kids to explore various subjects so they can develop a habit of seeking information. Whether it’s dancing, singing, arts and crafts, or filming, your kids want to learn, encourage them to try and learn

Financial Literacy

Not many kids grow up knowing anything about money. You don’t have to teach them the complex things but the basics so they understand how money works. The earlier they learn, the better off they will be. Don’t spoil them by giving them money for free because they will never want to do anything. Life isn’t free, so they should know how hard it is to get money. Let them understand what hard work is and being paid to do a service.

Be Grateful

Kids don’t know what being grateful is. When kids see what other kids have, they want it, too. Teaching your kids to be grateful is essential because it is the foundation of their emotional well-being. If you teach your kids to appreciate things, they will treasure what they have, not get entangled in materialism, and focus on contentment and personal growth.

Implement Healthy Habits

Teach your kids that health is a priority over anything else. Healthy habits are vital for kids and adults. Kids should get plenty of sleep, eat healthily, and stay active. With technology these days, kids don’t know what outside is. Don’t let them sit in the house, play video games, and watch YouTube all day. Create a schedule for them where they can stick to it. Kids should learn that health is an important factor in life and should not be ignored. By teaching them to make good choices, they will have a healthier lifestyle.

Build Relationships

Having strong relationships with others is good for your children’s growth and well-being. In life, you can’t do everything by yourself. Teaching your kids to build healthy relationships by communicating effectively, resolving conflicts, and cooperating with others will lay the foundation for successful collaboration in the future. The world doesn’t revolve around just you but multiple people in the universe.

FROM THE MCA BLOG – Recent posts on the blog

Be a Role Model

If you set an example, your kids will follow. You are the leader that should lead your kids with pride. Kids look up to their parents the most, so whatever you do, you will greatly influence them. Kids often learn through observation, so whenever they observe an adult’s behaviour, they will follow. Whatever morals, values, behaviours, and skills you want your kids to have, you must teach them when they are young. Slowly, they will develop and become the person you want them to be. If you become a role model for them, they will become role models for others.

Creativity and Innovation

Kids can be so creative sometimes. They think about things that not even adults know. As parents, you want to encourage your kids to follow their passions, think beyond conventional boundaries, and develop problem-solving abilities. By encouraging them, you empower them to be confident, independent thinkers better equipped to tackle the complexities and uncertainties of the future.

In Summary

Parenting: Preparing Your Kids for a Brighter Future – Think About Your Kids!

No matter how hard life can be, your teachings are important to your kids. As parents, caregivers, and educators, you play a huge part in your kids’ lives, so lead them by example. They are the next generation, so you want them to prepare for the unknown. Every parent wants what’s best for their kids. If you want your kids to live happier, more fulfilling lives and become well-rounded, you must impart these valuable lessons.

4 Ways to Minimise Your Car-Related Expenses

Minimise Your Car-Related Expenses

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have noticed that everything seems to be getting more expensive at the moment. And as such, there’s a lot of value in working to keep your costs down to a minimum. After all, while you can’t eliminate some expenses entirely, there are usually things you can do that’ll help to reduce the cost — and that can have a big impact on your overall financial health.

In this post, we’re going to focus on reducing the costs of owning and using a car, which is one of the bigger expenses that people have to contend with. You can’t get the expenses down to zero unless you give up car ownership, but with these tips, you’ll be in a stronger position to handle the many costs.

Prioritise Maintenance

You might have the day-to-day costs of owning a vehicle under control, but what if something goes wrong? There’s been a 40% rise in the cost of car repairs since 2018, so if you have an incident that requires expert help, then you could find that it has a significant impact on your bank balance. While you can’t always prevent car-related issues, you can minimise the risk by investing in your car’s maintenance. It’s much cheaper to prevent a problem rather than fix one, so be sure to stay on top of your car’s servicing.

Invest in a Reliable Vehicle

Not all cars are created equal. Some vehicles will cost you a lot more money than others. This happens in two ways — either they have poor fuel efficiency (which means more trips to the petrol station) or they’re just unreliable, and constantly need to be taken for expensive repairs. If your current vehicle matches either of those descriptions, then you can reduce your long-term car-related expenses by upgrading to a more vehicle car. Hyundai cars, for instance, are well-known for being reliable and easy to maintain, so consider paying a visit to a Hyundai dealership to see what vehicles they have available. Of course, upgrading your car will bring another advantage, too: you’ll enjoy driving more!

Petrol-Saving Driving

Some cars naturally use more petrol than others. But equally, some drivers use more fuel than others. And it all comes down to their driving style. If you’re accelerating or braking overly aggressively, then you’ll end up using much more petrol than is necessary. Learn the art of keeping your MPG down, and you’ll be doing your bank balance a big favour.

Use Public Transport

Finally, keep in mind that you don’t always need to drive all the way when you need to get somewhere. In some cases, you don’t need to drive at all. It can be much cheaper to drive a portion of the way before taking a bus or train the rest of the way — for example, if you’re driving into a busy centre. In that scenario, you’d use more petrol standing in traffic and may need to pay for expensive parking. It’s always best to check the most cost-effective way to get somewhere!

5 Reasons To Start An Online T-Shirt Business – roaringpumpkintees

AD – own products. If you haven’t already heard, we launched our family T-Shirt business today! roaringpumpkintees is born. We’ve worked hard over the last six months – drawing, editing images and creating the look and feel of the website.

I’m so proud of my achievements with the launch of this blog, then the second and third blogs. In addition to a new family endeavour, which allows us to get our little one involved in the whole process. She even helps me click buttons to create designs for my blogs. And it’s teaching her great lessons, about working hard, managing money and following your dreams.

I wanted to go into a bit more detail on why I chose this name for the first business I set up

roaringpumpkintees.com

My toddler is full of sass, definitely has a fierce spirit and is exactly like her mummy in this respect. We are both stubborn and when we put our minds to something, we will not be stopped. Under any circumstances! I am proud of my toddler and I want to always nurture her roaring pumpkin spirit. Even if she can be frustrating at times (as I’m sure all toddlers are). I’ve spent my life being misunderstood by many people around me. But I am now at a point where I value the people who make time to understand me. We are all unique and it should be celebrated.

roaringpumpkintees

Following a difficult pregnancy, mental health problems throughout early pregnancy. A traumatic birth, returning to a high-pressure job just as covid hit, and then work pressure whilst working from home. This perfect storm would be enough to push anyone to breaking point. For me, it inevitably resulted in a mental breakdown. And it would be a full 18 months before I felt anything like myself again. During this time, I felt compelled to set up my first mental health blog. And subsequently set up another two blogs. I completely changed careers, twice, and worked on my self-development through a hypnotherapy course – with a great therapist.

Here are some reasons you should start your own, online business

Low Start Up Costs

The only cost to you is setting up a website. The actual printing is facilitated by another company, meaning the risk to you is minimal.

Everyone loves T-Shirts

Who doesn’t love a quirky design on a T-Shirt? I’ve always loved them and as a family, we own loads of them. Why not put your own creative ideas out there, for other people to buy?

Add another income stream to your life

It’s no secret that I would love to run my blogs full-time. However, anyone in the blogging industry understands these things take time. And in the meantime, I have bills to pay. It’s also wonderful that I’ve finally found a day job I love so much!

Adding another income stream to your existing side hustles can allow you more financial freedom, to make decisions about your future. Or address anything you need to pay off before you start meeting your future financial goals.

The ability to work from home

The world has changed dramatically since 2019. Working from home is now the norm for a lot of people. Setting up any online business will allow you to work from home, on your own terms.

You get to do something you’re passionate about

We are all creatives in our house. It’s something I want to nurture in my toddler. Staring your own online T-Shirt business can allow you to show off your creative side. And basque in the excitement of coming up with new designs. Sharing your passion with everyone else.

3 Smart Ways To Downsize Your Life & Save A Lot Of Money!

We’re in the unfortunate position of living through another difficult financial period. Those of you that remember the 2008 financial crisis will have hoped that it was the only recession you lived through. As inflation rates keep rising, life is getting much harder for the average person.

Here are some tips on how to Downsize Your Life…

Downsize Your Life

In simple terms, everything is so damn expensive!

We need to find smart ways to save money. And downsizing your life is a great place to start. Basically, downsizing involves going from something big or grand and swapping it for a smaller or more cost-effective thing. It’s usually spoken about in housing terms as people downsize to smaller and more affordable homes. While that is an option, it’s a bit extreme. Instead, here are three other ways to downsize your life and save money.

Downsize your car

Aside from your house, your car is probably the most expensive thing you own. It costs a fortune to run, particularly with fuel prices these days. So, selling your car and getting one that’s cheaper to run is a lot smarter.

You can use online tools like the VW value my car registration search to see how much your vehicle is worth if you wanted to trade it in. Opt for something that’s more fuel-efficient and reliable than your current vehicle. This will help you save a fortune every month on fuel and every year on repairs.

Downsize your shopping

How much money do you spend a week on shopping? If you go to one of the main supermarkets in the UK, you can easily run up a shopping bill between £100-£200 every week.

There are plenty of ways to save money on supermarket shopping, but one of the easiest is to downsize to a cheaper store. Instead of going to Tesco or M&S every week, do your big shop at Lidl or Aldi. Everything is much cheaper, so you can buy all the stuff you like at a fraction of the cost. It all adds up and can slash your weekly shopping bill in half.

Downsize your entertainment

It’s time to be smarter and more proactive with your personal finances. Stop splashing the cash on multiple subscription services that all do the same thing. If you’re subscribed to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus, you’re probably spending close to £30 a month on entertainment. And this doesn’t even consider a Sky or Virgin Media TV subscription!

Downsize your entertainment by choosing one or two subscription services instead of three or four. Opt for Freeview instead of paying for TV channels too; it’s really not worth it if you’re also paying for a streaming service. The chances are you’ll still be able to keep yourself entertained but for much less money. Also, you can chop and changes subscriptions whenever you want. Have Netflix for a couple of months and then Amazon for another few, etc. It lets you experience all the shows without paying loads of money every single month.

Give downsizing a try to see how much money your family can save. For the most part, you’re making a few small changes and tiny sacrifices that have a hugely positive impact on your life.

My Favourite Self-Care Products For Mother’s Day

It’s no secret that I love affordable but effective beauty products. And I try and fit in self-care whenever I can. These trusted beauty products, allow me to quickly transform from mum mode into work or going out mode. And given our recent family financial difficulties, my purchases must also be affordable.

I want to share some of my favourite self-care products in this gift guide.

self-care products

Quick note: Some of the links contained on this page are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase, I will earn a commission. I only recommend products I use myself and think would be useful for other people.

My Favourite products from the No7 range

self-care products

Here are some of the trusted No7, everyday self-care products I am currently using. And why I love them so much

Gel Finish Nail Colour 10ml (pictured above)

Every few months, I pick another colour from the range. It is part of my self-care routine, to do my nails for work and also when I go out. Let’s all just agree right now, that blogging images also look better when someone has their nails done! However, finding the time to do them is a different story.

Lip & Cheek Tint 10ml (pictured above)

I tried this product a while ago and it’s great. I bought a light shade of pink and it’s a lovely addition to the cheeks for going out. It also added some much-needed colour to my cheeks for work the other day.

High Shine Lip Gloss 8ml (pictured above)

Again, this is a product I use daily. If I fancy a bit of subtle colour at work, or for going out. It’s an easy-to-use product, and the coverage is great. It also has lasting power, without getting bitty.

Lift & Luminate TRIPLE ACTION Primer

I have tried several make-up primers in the past. But this one is silky smooth and gives a flawless finish to your makeup. I notice a difference when I don’t use it!

No7 The Full 360 Mascara 7ml

As someone with pretty short eyelashes, I need something which transforms my eyes from a normal working mum to going out to party mode. This mascara does just that and it’s a trusted product I keep going back to. Because it works. And it’s affordable.

Strength & Growth Treatment 10ml

In the past, I haven’t been kind to my nails. And I am now seeing the impact of the damage. As I frequently use nail polish, I need to use a treatment to look after my nails.

Stay Perfect Base Coat 10ml

A few years ago, I decided to start using a base and top coat with my nail polish. Simply to protect my nails and also give me a more flawless look. If you use this base with the gel finish products, it can give the look of fuller nails. A bit like you would get when they apply shellac in a salon. But with much less cost involved!

Gel Finish Top Coat 10ml

Exactly what it says on the tin. A flawless finish protects the colour of the nails underneath. If I am on holiday, this product can bring staying power to the nails, which is a must. Who wants to be doing their nails when they can be at the beach, with a cocktail instead?

Lift & Luminate TRIPLE ACTION Serum Concealer 8ml (pictured below)

I use this product daily. In place of a BB cream or foundation. The coverage is great and it leaves my skin looking fresh throughout the day.

Because I love The Body Shop so much, I have made it a mission to try some new self-care products. And I must say, I am not disappointed. Read my review of them below.

Trusted products I use frequently

Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter

This goes on in a solid form but quickly melts to a nice clear butter. Not too heavy but feels nourishing and brings off the day’s impurities. It also smells lovely and there is a calming, take-the-day-off sense about it. I will now be adding it to my skincare routine and using it a few times a week. Along with my Edelweiss skincare products

Almond Nail And Cuticle Oil

This nail oil smells divine. I’ve been on the lookout for some great cuticle treatments for a while and thought I would try this. The brush and applicator allow just the right amount. And the consistency turns from a slight gel to oil once brushed on. A bit like smelling fresh cherry Bakewell baking in the oven, whilst you partake in self-care.

Edelweiss Serum Concentrate Sheet Mask

Let’s start with opening the packet – there is so much liquid in there, which gives great overall coverage and you know you’re in for a real treat. I will be honest and say I usually opt for the much cheaper sheet masks. And although this price point is higher, you literally get what you pay for and this product has a quality all over it.

I’ve never tried a sheet mask where the moisture soaks into the face and the mask eventually goes dry. But this happened with the Edelweiss mask. It smells lovely and my skin was left feeling nourished and refreshed after using it. I will be purchasing more.

Banana Truly Nourishing Shampoo

I bought a little bottle of this to try it. When I’ve used banana products from other brands before, they can be overpowering and sickly. However, this has just the right amount of fragrance. It honestly makes my hair feel lovely and the smell brings about a relaxing sense. I will be purchasing a bigger bottle.

Strawberry Shower Gel

I’ve loved the fruity scents from The Body Shop since I was a teen. It just depends on what scents you’re into the most. I feel relaxed, looked after and like I’m in a field picking strawberries when I use this product. Love it so much, so I had to treat myself recently.

Hemp Hand Protector

This is so nourishing with a hint of fragrance. You can tell it’s helping to protect your hands. My hubby uses it every day before work and I also love pinching a bit of it too!

Hemp Heavy-Duty Lip Care

As I suffer from dry lips, this product is a must for me. Especially to protect your lips in the cold weather.

Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask

I’ve used this product for a while now. And even before I purchased the Edelweiss range, the charcoal mask left my skin feeling fresh. And my complexion was noticeably clearer.

Final Thoughts

I hope you enjoyed reading the rundown of the trusted beauty products I use daily.

Do you use any of these products? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

And I would love your suggestions on any other products I should try…

Understanding the Causes of Stress and How to Overcome Them

Stress is a common experience for many people, and it can profoundly impact mental and physical health. In this blog post, we will explore the various ways to cope with stress better and develop strategies to manage its effects. We’ll discuss how to recognize stress triggers, identify healthy coping strategies, and incorporate techniques such as relaxation techniques and mindfulness into your daily routine. Finally, we’ll look at various available resources to help you deal with stress effectively. Whether you’re just beginning to feel overwhelmed or looking for long-term solutions, this guide will provide some useful guidance on managing stress in your life. Ready to reduce the causes of stress?

causes of stress

What is Stress?

Stress is defined as the emotional and physical strain caused by our response to pressure from the outside world. It can originate from a wide range of sources, such as work, family responsibilities, relationships, health concerns, or significant life changes. While some amount of stress is normal and even beneficial in certain situations, prolonged or excessive levels can lead to a variety of physical and mental health problems.

Causes of Stress

Stress can be caused by a variety of factors, including difficult life situations such as job loss and family issues or even seemingly manageable things like work deadlines. Other common stress triggers include financial problems, health concerns, relationship issues, and time pressures. Some people may also experience causes of stress in response to unexpected events such as natural disasters or personal tragedies.

Recognizing Stress Triggers

The first step in managing your stress is to identify the things that trigger it. Pay attention to your physical and emotional reactions when you feel overwhelmed, and try to pinpoint what triggered your reaction. Once you know what causes your stress, you can begin to develop strategies for dealing with it more effectively.

Signs and Symptoms of Stress

The signs and symptoms of stress can vary from person to person but generally include physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, digestive issues, and skin problems. Mental health symptoms include difficulty concentrating, difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, irritability or mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Other common signs include feeling overwhelmed or constantly in a rush; lacking motivation; avoiding social situations; procrastination; frequent crying spells, and reduced productivity at work.

Understanding Your Response to Stress

It is crucial to understand how your body responds to different levels of stress in order to develop strategies for managing it more effectively. Common responses to stress can include increased heart rate, shallow breathing, muscle tension, and feeling overwhelmed. Recognizing these signs in yourself can help to identify when it is time to take a break from a stressful situation.

Coping Strategies

Stress is an inevitable part of life and can be challenging to manage. However, learning how to cope with stress and practice self-care effectively is essential for maintaining good physical, mental and emotional health. Developing healthy habits such as engaging in regular physical activity, practising mindfulness, eating well, and creating routines or calendars can help reduce stress levels daily. By implementing these strategies into your lifestyle, you will start to feel more relaxed and better equipped to handle any challenges that come your way. Additionally, seeking professional help, if necessary, is also crucial in managing thoughts or feelings that are overwhelming or disruptive.

Benefits of Physical Exercise for Reducing Stress

Regular physical activity can help to counter the adverse effects of stress. Exercise releases endorphins that can improve your mood and reduce feelings of depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Additionally, it helps to strengthen your body’s natural defences against stress-related illnesses such as high blood pressure or heart disease. A combination of aerobic exercise (such as running), strength training (such as weightlifting), stretching, and relaxation techniques are all beneficial for managing stress levels.

Eating Healthy Key to Managing Anxiety and Stress

Eating a balanced and nutritious diet is essential for managing stress. Eating foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can help improve mood and reduce feelings of fatigue or irritability. Making dietary changes such as eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and reducing your intake of processed foods, sugary snacks, or caffeine can help to reduce stress levels. Avoiding processed foods and caffeine and getting enough sleep can also contribute to better overall health, which will help with your ability to cope with stressful situations. Avoiding overeating is also crucial, as this can lead to feeling sluggish, irritable, or anxious, which can further contribute to stress.

Mindfulness Practices: An Effective Tool in Dealing with Stress

Mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga, and tai chi are beneficial techniques for reducing stress levels. By intentionally bringing awareness to your present moment experience and allowing yourself to observe thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment, you can recognize patterns in how you respond to stressful situations.

Organizing Your Time: Creating Calendars; Routines

Creating routines and calendars for managing your daily activities can help make you feel more organized, reducing feelings of overwhelm and anxiety associated with stress. By planning out your day, you can prioritize tasks and create a more structured method of managing workloads. This will help to make sure that all necessary tasks are completed in a timely manner, leaving room for moments of relaxation or enjoyment.

Prioritizing Self-Care

It is important to remember that your well-being comes first. It is easy to get caught up in work or daily tasks, but it is essential to take time out for yourself in order to relax and focus on your own needs. Prioritizing self-care activities such as getting enough sleep, spending time with loved ones, taking breaks from screens, journaling, and practising relaxation techniques can help to reduce stress levels and improve your overall well-being.

Seeking Professional Help

Suppose stress has a significant impact on your daily life. In that case, it may be beneficial to seek professional help from a counsellor or therapist who can provide more effective strategies for managing your responses. Talking about how you feel with someone trained in mental health issues can help to alleviate anxious thoughts or feelings of despair. Delta 8 Gummies could also be used as an additional tool for managing stress levels. These gummies are derived from hemp plants and contain CBD, which has been proven to reduce anxiety and stress levels. The gummies are available in a variety of flavours, making them an easy-to-use option for those looking for a quick way to relax and destress.

Simple Tips for Everyday Living that Promote Well-Being and Reduce Stress Levels

Living a healthy lifestyle that is balanced and manageable can reduce stress levels. Taking time for yourself to engage in activities or hobbies that you enjoy, getting enough sleep, spending time with friends and family, laughing more often, creating boundaries between work and home life, and setting achievable goals are all simple strategies that can be used on a daily basis. Additionally, learning how to say no to tasks or requests that exceed your ability to manage them effectively can also help reduce feelings of stress and overwhelm.

Stress is an inevitable part of life, and it is essential to learn how to manage it effectively. Finding the right mix of activities that work best for you on an individual basis is key to reducing stress levels and promoting overall well-being. Remember to be kind to yourself, take a break when needed, reach out for professional support if required, and don’t forget to have fun along the way. With these tips in mind, you will soon find yourself better equipped to cope with life’s challenges with confidence.

If Something Goes Wrong Financially

The first reason that you’re going to need to save is if something goes wrong financially. It’s always difficult to know when things are going to go wrong, so you’ve got to be prepared at all times as much as you can. It’s tough when things go wrong financially, and it often feels as though you’re a failure, but we promise you that this is not the case. Everyone struggles sometimes, whether that’s because they have lost their job, or because there has been a big, unforeseen expense. The important thing is that you have something that you can dip into to support yourself for a while.

If You Need Something Immediately

If you need something immediately, then having money in savings might be the best thing that you can do for yourself. We don’t all have spare cash just laying around, ready for when we need it, but savings can be used for this if you need to. If you’re worried about spending this money, you can always put it back when you get your next paycheck to put yourself back where you were.

Some of the things that you may need money for are home repairs, purchasing a new car if your old one stops working, or maybe even legal issues. If you do end up with legal issues and are going to be attending court, you may want to look into something like giving evidence lessons by veritas witness training just to make sure you’re fully prepared.

Money To Fall Back On

Last but not least, the reason that money is so important is that you have to have something to fall back on. It’s nice to know that you’ve got this sum in your bank account, ready for you to use should you need it for whatever reason. It’s a safety net of sorts, and everyone should have one if possible.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that saving money can be helpful for in the future. We know that some people have a habit of thinking that the future is going to pay for itself, or that this is a problem that you can tackle when it comes around, but this is not usually going to be the case. You need to save now so that if you do find yourself in a tough situation, you know that you have a plan in place to support you. We wish you the very best of luck.

6 Areas I’ve Of My Life Which Have Drastically Improved – Perma Hypnotherapy

Perma Hypnotherapy – AD – long-term collaboration/series of blog posts

Now we are coming to the end of my hypnotherapy journey, it’s fascinating to look back at the process and how the mechanics of the Perma Hypnotherapy model work. And how my life has drastically improved. I completed the journey without having the roadmap to hand. But I have naturally improved each of these areas of my life. And it’s only at the end of the journey, that the full picture of the work we completed is revealed.

I finally feel ready to take on this role. Like I am recovered from my mental breakdown fully, and it’s time to grab these opportunities with both hands. And it’s exactly what I recently did.
Why not finally use my experiences to do some good in the world and help other people? It doesn’t feel like work! It feels like I am finally thriving.

“The optimists believe defeat is just a temporary setback.”

How I implemented change

There were many techniques and processes we used throughout our hypnotherapy sessions. But one, in particular, stuck with me. The way Kevin explained this process during our sessions, was by giving a certain part of the brain an instruction to improve or change things. Then the worker or factory makes it happen, behind the scenes. This is the reason that people who complete hypnotherapy courses often see drastic changes, seemingly out of nowhere. Changes are happening on a sunconcious level and this is definitely something I experienced.

Let’s take a look at how each of the areas of my life has dramatically improved as a result of completing this Perma Hypnotherapy course

Finance

My finances before hypnotherapy

I didn’t always have a good relationship with my finances. Back in the anxiety filled days, I would impulse buy things to make myself feel better. Unsurprisingly it never worked and usually made me feel worse. Lately, we’ve had a tough time financially as a family, due to the life-changing circumstances we’ve experienced.

My finances right now and looking to the future

It’s only now I am taking more control of my life and the direction I want to go in, that I am prioritising financial health. Because of this, I feel less fearful about my financial future and a lot more optimistic. As a family, we have financial goals and we have actually started to tackle some of them.

I think the main feeling I have is EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY – I no longer live in fear that we might have a lack of money or one of us will be made redundant. I am safe in the knowledge that if that happens, we are resilient enough to get through it.

“Optimists recover from their momentary helplessness immediately. Very soon after failing, they pick themselves up, shrug, and start trying again.”

― Martin E.P. Seligman, Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life

Career

The last 10-15 years of career history

I spent years in a high-paid career that I kind of fell into. Don’t get me wrong, at times I enjoyed it, but ultimately it wasn’t in line with my values, or what I wanted to do with my life.

It is unsurprising that when I did the character strength test, helping other people came top of the list. It seems I wasn’t going to find my calling until I was fulfilling this need. Not only did my mental breakdown allow me to help other people via a blog, (a communication channel I love – writing and getting great feedback, from an amazing online community – who helped me during my darkest days) but it also allowed me to make career changes.

The significant changes I recently made

It was time to finally use the skills and confidence I had gained from the hypnotherapy course to change my situation. I spent a lot of time putting together a fresh CV, using my transferable skills and essentially selling myself. The old me would have come up with an excuse not to apply for the job. The new me just went for it and threw myself into the challenge. Despite still feeling anxiety.

You want to know the main thing I did during my two career change interviews? I was honest. About my mental health, and my reasons for wanting to help people. It’s as if I connected on a human level and feedback from the first job role, after my redundancy, was that my lived experience was taken into consideration. And valued. It was amazing to hear this.

Where am I now?

Because of funding, it was unlikely I could stay in my current role past the new year. Therefore I made a recent decision to apply for another job in the charity sector, doing something I absolutely love. This role involves slightly more hours as well, which will help our financial family goals.

“Here is the exercise: find one wholly unexpected kind thing to do tomorrow and just do it. Notice what happens to your mood.”

Development

Constantly changing beings

Human beings are constantly changing and we should always want to update and improve ourselves. This is exactly what the Perma model does. It asks you to reevaluate your character strengths and values based on your current life situation. In giving your brain new instructions, related to the life goals you have, you naturally ditch old behaviours that don’t serve you anymore.

How life circumstances can and will change your values

We’ve all heard people talk about ‘life-changing events’ and until you’ve gone through this process yourself, it doesn’t make much sense. Over the last four years, here are some of the life changing events I have experienced: Pregnancy, antenatal depression during pregnancy, started taking anti-depressents when pregnant, severe anxiety about the pregnancy process, a traumatic birth, mental health problems for two years following pregnancy. Returning to work following maternity leave, for the pandemic to hit less than one month later. Adjustment to working from home. Financial impact on our family. Change of routine (partner off work for 12 weeks as vulnerable and nursery closing). Followed by a mental breakdown due to work pressure (literally being afraid to return to my own home and open my laptop). Returning to work, reluctantly. Redundancy a few months later. A further five months off work, which I had to use to recover and financially funded myself. Changing careers and slowly putting my life back together using self improvement techniques.

Motherhood

Motherhood is a great example of how my values completely changed. Subconsciously, my full-time, demanding job was no longer fit for purpose. But I didn’t realise this until things went horribly wrong. The day I sat down to do the character strengths test, it was apparent that some of my values had changed. Motherhood was now my priority and I needed a career to fit around this, to create a work-life balance. Working with my current life situation, instead of against it.

Home life

Home life during my demanding career

Based on everything I’ve described above, you can imagine our home life wasn’t previously very happy. In my most demanding career days, working 12 hours (not including travel time), I was completely exhausted. I would ask my now-hubby not to talk to me all evening. I was beyond tired, pretty much all the time and this was no life for each of us. Yes, I earned a lot of money, but I never had the time or energy to spend it. When I did, we would splash out to “reduce the stress”.

We are not always conscious of our decisions

However, at the point of giving birth to my little one, I didn’t consciously realise this job wouldn’t fit my circumstances anymore. Let alone decide it wasn’t even something I wanted to do. As human beings, we plod along on autopilot, and it’s completely okay if you’re doing this. The key factor is that you need to be happy, not stressed out and mostly content with your actions.

If there is something missing, as there was with me, it might be time to look into a Perma Hypnotherapy course.

Relationships

Our family life

My hubby and I are both strong-minded. We have some communication problems, due to our brains being rewired completely differently. It’s taken us time, patience and hard work to understand each other. As you can imagine, during my mental breakdown and the aftermath, I wasn’t a very happy or easy person to be around,

When I started this hypnotherapy course, I felt like I could make some changes on my own. But I had an overwhelming feeling that something was still missing. I knew I needed help or guidance of some sort, and I am so glad Kevin arrived and posed the opportunity for working together.

Because it’s been so vastly life-changing – it is truly one of the best experiences of my life.

Our relationship communication following my hypnotherapy course

I am not going to tell you our communication is perfect. We will always face the same barriers as before. The significant difference is now, I am more open, honest and in control. By in control, I mean I often walk away when communication isn’t going well. I understand that the brain reacts automatically to stressful situations. A bit like when there is no point talking to a toddler mid-meltdown. Well, the same applies to us as adults. Our primitive automatic response kicks in and it’s best to calmy compose yourself before entering into the discussion, if you can.

What hypnotherapy has helped me do is be more in control of this response. I’ve spent time, meditating, and working on myself, and I am now able to realise when a situation will become heated, or when I am about to react badly myself. Something I never mastered in my life before now.

A little mention for the parents

It’s important to mention the role of parents. Our communication was poor before we had children. Any parent out there will be aware children bring with them new challenges. We are lucky these days if we can fit in any adult conversation, with a loud toddler running around. It’s therefore important to make time to discuss adult matters or reconnect with one another. We now make time. Yes, every day is far from perfect and it’s sometimes a while until our next reconnecting time. But I am confident and assured it will happen. More importantly, I now realise that spending time doing reconnecting has huge benefits for our family. And it’s, therefore, a must!

Health

Because of the significant link between physical and mental health, I have struggled physically for a number of years. Mainly with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. My health is still not perfect, but I do now understand when my anxiety symptoms are causing a physical reaction in my body. And I can tell the difference between a food related or mind related reaction.

In moments where I am suffering physically, I try my best to overcome whatever is causing me stress or anxiety, in order to alleviate the symptoms.

Final thoughts

I now have a toolbox I can use to maintain a great standard of wellbeing. Mastering trance sessions has helped me access a place of calm within myself and talk to myself on a sunconsious level. To reevaluate where I am in life and make any nessecery changes.

Kevin provides practical guidance and support – as well as a vast amount of accessible resources which you have for life! I am thankful for this journey and looking forward to the bright future I have ahead of me.

If you’re ready to start your self improvement journey, get in contact with Kevin. You wont be disappointed.

Be More Proactive About Your Personal Finances With These Tips

When it comes to getting financial advice, it can be easy for us to roll our eyes at the idea that we need to save more money or take charge of our personal finances. Instead, we need to find a financial planner to help us figure out where we are, where we want to be, and how to get there.

A financial adviser (through sites like financialadvisers.co.uk) will be able to provide us with the information and guidance necessary for us to make informed decisions about our money and investing.

There are a few other tips that can help you to be more proactive when it comes to your personal finances:

Your Credit Score Matters

Your credit score is a numerical representation of your creditworthiness. It can affect things like loans, mortgages, and insurance premiums. Your credit score is based on your payment history and the amount you owe.

Budgeting is a Must

Budgets are the foundation of many good personal financial plans. With a budget, you can know how much money is coming in and going out regularly. This makes it impossible to determine if you’re saving enough or whether there are areas where you can cut back on your spending.

A reasonable budget should be realistic, easy to follow and have content categories that make sense for your spending habits. Once you have a solid understanding of your monthly expenses, tracking where the money goes each month becomes much easier so adjustments can be made as needed.

Get Familiar With Your Expenses

Every month, you may spend a lot of money on things you need to realize or remember. This can include everything from groceries and rent to Netflix and gym membership. Knowing where this money is going is important because it helps you make better decisions about how much time, effort, and focus you should put into saving for the future.

Keep Track of Your Progress

If you want to stay on top of all the financial details in your life and keep things running smoothly, then you need to monitor what is going on with your finances every day. You should be keeping track of your income, expenses, and savings in some way, whether with pen and paper or through an app on your phone. Keep tabs on where all your money is going so you can cut back if needed.

personal finances

Protect Your Identity

Protect your identity by keeping your personal information safe. For example, don’t give out personal information to strangers, don’t open emails from people you don’t know, and don’t click on links in those emails. You must also refrain from emailing companies that call you, especially if they ask for it over the phone.

Create a Plan If You Have Student Loans

If you are still paying student loans, there are ways to make the process easier, creating a budget and a plan so you can spend more than the monthly minimum. It’s tempting just to pay what you have to do for your monthly loans, but if you want them paid off quickly, it’s best to maximize every payment and aim for more.

Always Have An Emergency Fund

You should have an emergency fund with at least three months’ expenses. This way, if something goes wrong with your car or you lose your job, you will be able to pay for the necessities and still have time to find a new job.

If you already have this much set-aside and want to increase it further, consider putting some of it into a high-yield savings account. This type of account will give you better interest rates on your money than what banks offer with their traditional savings accounts so that more of it can grow over time without costing too much in fees.

It’s Never Too Early to  Start Saving for Retirement

Retirement is one of the most significant financial milestones you’ll face in your lifetime, so it pays to start saving early. The earlier you start saving for retirement, the more time your money has to grow. The longer money is invested, the more opportunity it has to make compound interest work for you instead of against you.

So, the sooner you start saving for retirement, the less pressure you’ll feel to save a large amount at once. It’s much easier to make small monthly contributions than to suddenly come up with thousands at once.

Conclusion

If you want to be more proactive about your finances, start by reflecting on where you are now. Once you have a plan in place for what needs to happen tomorrow or next week, then move on to the next step, making sure that this plan is realistic for both today’s world and tomorrow’s financial responsibilities. Remember that all good things will take time.
