How To Create Accessibility In The Home

For some, having accessibility within the home is important. There are also occasions when accidents or injuries happen and having an accessible home can be helpful during those times, whether they be a temporary aid or a permanent one.

Not all homes have been created with accessibility in mind, even though to do so, wouldn’t really do much in compromising the space. In fact, it can make the home feel more spacious as a result.

Check out these tips, to create accessibility in your home.

Install ramps on exterior doors

Ramps are a great addition to the home as they can help those in wheelchairs or those that can’t lift their legs high up, access the home. Some may only install ramps on the front door but what about the back? Anyone who might want to go outside, out the back, might find it beneficial to have a ramp installed on the back door too!

Ramps come in many shapes and sizes, with some being permanent solutions and others being temporary ones, depending on their use. A perfect solution to creating accessibility.

Create wider door frames

Wider door frames are always worth having when it comes to creating accessibility in the home. These door frames can help those in wheelchairs or those who might need a bit of extra room when it comes to squeezing through. For example, someone on crutches may greatly appreciate having a wider door frame in place.

These can be fitted fairly easily and there are still plenty of options that can be used when it comes to their style and appearance of them.

Consider mobility in the bathroom

When it comes to accessibility, one of the most important places to have mobility in the home, is in the bathroom. A bathroom is a place where mobility shower cubicles and hand rests are worthwhile to have installed. A walk-in shower cubicle is an easy way of adding accessibility and it looks visually stunning too!

If there’s not enough room for a walk-in shower, add a pole to the side of the bath to help a person ease themselves in and out of the bathtub. 

Have a door entry system in place

A great addition to the home that brings both accessibility and security to the property is a door entry system. For those times when a person might struggle to open the door by the handle, a door entry system is a better way to get into the home.

The door entry system can also help add that extra layer of security to the property.

Make sure the floor space is always clear

The floor space is an area of the home that’s important to try and keep clear as best as possible. There are going to be days when the clutter gets on top of you. However, it’s good to try and clean as you go and to purchase any additional storage in order to stay on top of the mess that can often form.

Creating accessibility in the home is great for those who need to cater to their less-than-able household or any guests that might be invited to the home.

    If you follow my blog, you will know I love The Body Shop. Since being a teenager and buying animal-shaped soaps on my trips to the nearest town centre with friends. I’ve loved the scents and the ethos behind the company. 

    In recent years, I now require high-quality products. It’s all about taking care of my skin and having a little self-care and indulgence in my life. As a busy mum, lack of sleep sometimes means bad skin, dark circles and all the other wonderful downsides of motherhood. A rescue plan to make me look and feel better is required.

    Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask 

    I’ve been looking for a product to even my skin tone and I am so impressed with the results after using this scrub. It’s my go-to product now.  And I’ve already ordered more. As a busy mum, having an even skin tone and refreshed look means less maintenance. Given that I quickly rub concealer on my face, in the car before the nursery drop. Anything that avoids this extra task, I will pay good money for. 

    Over the summer, it is nicer to have no make-up on your face. These days it just sweats off me anyway. This charcoal mask is a weekly treat I can use to enable me to have a fresh face for summer outings.

    Almond Milk Body Butter

    I must admit, I love the fruity body butter from The Body Shop. But they do tend to be a little thicker in consistency. This one is my new favourite. Simply because it’s so light on your skin and totally refreshing for summer. I can imagine taking it on holiday abroad with me and feeling extra moisturised after a day in the sun.

    Hemp Hand Protector

    We’ve all heard of this one. I would say it’s one of the most iconic Body Shop products. I’ve wanted to try it for a while and my hubby is in need of some because he works outside in all weather conditions.

    The texture is lovely and it smells amazing. You can literally feel it immediately helping your skin. And I love that feeling.

    Ginger Anti-dandruff Shampoo

    This isn’t a product I would normally choose. I have dry, frizzy and unmanageable hair. However, the smell and the texture are so refreshing. And I actually really love using it now. It makes me feel cleaner than using my previous shampoo. Unlike other shampoos, you use a very tiny amount, which means it goes further than other products I’ve used in the past.

    Why do I need to look after my skin?

    This cleanser from the Edelweiss Range is lovely to use. I sometimes don’t like using them, because washing the cleanser off with water can make my skin dry. But the consistency of this product is perfect. Just the right amount of foam when mixed with water. And it starts as a gel – something I have never seen before.

    It leaves my skin feeling fresh, without feeling dry!

    I love a good serum. You just know it’s doing your skin the world of good and this one is lovely. The bottle and pipet just make me feel great like I am investing in my skincare routine (made with recycled glass too).

    Cleaning Your Home In Winter: The Best Tasks To Complete

    Cleaning your home in the winter can feel like a real chore – and even more so than usual! It’s cold out, you’re more likely to be tired, and you’re tempted to just leave it all until the spring. However, it’s a good idea to get some jobs out of the way right now. 

    If you do, you’ll make those spring cleaning jobs (and winter home protection) so much easier! So whether you’ve just moved home or you’re looking to have a really good cleanup before Christmas hits, this is the post for you!

    Take Down Curtains to Wash

    The curtains will need to be in prime condition to help keep the cold out, so now’s a good time to take them down and clean them. If they are hand washed only, fill a bucket with some warm water and a gentle soap and then give them a once over. But if there are no special instructions, you can just put them in the washing machine like anything else. 

    Go on a Dust Bust

    The dust tends to collect in winter, thanks to our tendency to shed more skin cells when it’s cold and dry out. As such, it’s time to go on a dust bust! Make sure your vacuum is empty and the filters are clean, and then get a can of polish and a duster in the other hand. 

    You can then go around your home, working top to bottom, cleaning up as much dust as you possibly can. Start high, like on top of bookshelves, hanging TVs, and bedframes and then tackle items like low shelves and skirting boards. It’ll make such a difference to your home’s look overall!

    Get Some Professional Contacts in the Book

    Some jobs are going to be a little too big for you to take on alone. This is why it’s best to get some professional contacts down in a notebook somewhere. You never know when you’ll need a water damage restoration company to come in and restore your basement and carpets, but it’s good to know who to call just in case! And when you do this work now, you can rest easy over the winter period and spend time thinking about Christmas and the cosy things that really matter. 

    Don’t Forget Gutters and Vents

    You may have to get outside in the wet and the cold for this one, but make sure both your gutters and any outside air vents are clean too. You don’t want them clogged up and then freezing over with hundreds of dead leaves, moss, and dust! This can lead to serious flooding and/or blockage problems, and that can be expensive to deal with during the winter time. Best to get them seen now before a problem really develops. 

    Your home is going to need cleaning in the winter. However, you don’t need to spend ages spritzing and wiping! No, you just need to tackle jobs like these proactively.
