A Family-Friendly Gem in Clitheroe: Our Visit to The Swan and Royal

I found a Family-Friendly Gem in Clitheroe! 📍26 Castle St, Clitheroe BB7 2BX

Clitheroe has become a bit of a regular spot for us as a family, but one thing we always seem to struggle with is finding somewhere suitable to eat with a toddler in tow. There’s a little cafe we love, but it’s almost always full, so on this particular visit we came armed with a few backup options thanks to a quick Google search. That’s how we ended up at The Swan and Royal—and honestly, I’m so glad we did.

First Impressions and Friendly Faces

The moment we stepped inside, a member of staff who immediately made us feel welcome greeted us. She happily let me take a quick look at the menu (a must when you have a little one who can be particular about food) and didn’t hesitate when I asked if we could sit somewhere a bit quieter. It’s such a small thing, but when you’re trying to keep a toddler settled, it makes a world of difference.

The pub itself has clearly had a recent refurb—fresh, clean, and really inviting. I asked for a wine list, but they’re in the middle of updating it, so instead the staff member talked me through the options. I’m not a fussy wine drinker; I usually go for the cheapest on the list because some places jump from £6 to £10 a glass, and that adds up quickly if you’re having a couple. He suggested a Pinot, which just so happens to be my favourite anyway, so that was a win.

Every staff member we interacted with was friendly, helpful, and genuinely pleasant. There was plenty of space, it wasn’t too loud, and it felt like a comfortable, relaxed place to sit as a family.

Delicious Food and Thoughtful Touches

When the food arrived, it exceeded all expectations. We decided to share a main with a couple of sides—partly to keep costs sensible, partly because I’d rather spend money on other things—but the flavours were spot on. Everything was cooked beautifully, and it’s those little touches that make a meal memorable.

But the real star of the show? The kids’ platter.

It arrived on an afternoon‑tea‑style stand, and the novelty alone was enough to keep our little one seated and engaged. She was genuinely impressed, which meant she actually sat and ate her food—every parent knows that’s a small miracle in itself.

I tried a bite of her ham sandwich and it was honestly some of the freshest ham and bread I’ve tasted. Even the veggie sticks were delicious. It felt like real care had gone into preparing something simple but high-quality for children, which is rare and very appreciated.

A Relaxing Environment for Families

The whole atmosphere was lovely—calm, clean, and comfortable. Even the toilets were spotless and well looked after, which always says a lot about a place.

We left feeling happy, full, and genuinely excited to return. It’s not often you find somewhere that ticks all the boxes for adults and little ones, but The Swan and Royal absolutely did.
