5 amazing days out on my 2021 autumn bucket list

Post updated – 30 July 2022

This time of the year is so magical & this means an autumn bucket list is in order – cold weather setting in, Halloween fun, the lead-up to Christmas, and all the other wonderful things I discuss in this blog post.

We started visiting pumpkin patches a few years ago, but up to then I’d never really bothered much with autumn-themed activities, other than celebrating Halloween.

Being part of the blogging world increases my excitement about all things autumn. September, when we start counting down the days until the colder mornings, buying Halloween costumes, putting up autumn decorations, planning where we will spend Halloween, what firework displays we will visit, bonfire night, and then Christmas planning. There is a lot to be excited about! When is the correct time to start buying Christmas presents? I am sure I will talk about this in a future blog post.

With this in mind, I had to start looking for some exciting activities to do across the whole season, and I wanted to share my findings with you. Autumn bucket list here I come!

autumn bucket list

1. Pumpkin patches

First up on my autumn bucket list, I want to share the two locations I’ve visited for pumpkin picking in the past:

Farmer Copleys

This was a great day out. There is ample parking when you arrive and a good system for picking and paying for your pumpkins.

Wear wellies, it was a rainy day when we visited and we had to wade through a muddy field.

They had a barn set up to get breakfast, a small bar for anyone drinking alcohol, and all the other snacks & drinks you’d expect. There were rides for the kids including a bucking bronco.

You can collect a wheelbarrow to take to the pumpkin picking field. Because she was a tiny baby at the time, we put our little one in it, instead of carrying her through the mud, haha!

autumn bucket list

Check out their website for specific information on this year’s pumpkin event, as some things may have changed.

You can book your tickets here.

Swithens Farm

This is a small farm and we mainly visited to see the animals. Although the farm is small, there are a lot of animals to see, including an indoor enclosure where you can brush a very friendly rabbit.

There are toy cars and tractors for the little ones to play in and toilet facilities all around the farm. You can also purchase carrots to feed the animals as you walk around.

autumn bucket list

They did have a pumpkin field when we visited and we got some nice pumpkins to carve. It isn’t on the scale of Farmer Copleys or as well organised, but a great addition to the day out, if you’re visiting the farm anyway.

The cafe offers the basics, and the service was a bit slow. However, their website looks to have been updated since we last visited. You can check out the pumpkin event here.

You can book tickets here.

Because I want to visit somewhere different this year, I’ve done some research and found a few possibilities:

Kemps Farm

I looked at this farm when doing research for where to visit in previous years and I like the sound of their tractor ride to the pumpkin field. Our little one would love this. You can check out the information here.

Spilman’s

This was also on the list when I previously researched the other two farms we visited, but we couldn’t get tickets.

It looks like there are new activities added and the entertainment alone makes me want to pay the higher price tag to keep our little one entertained for longer. You also get a voucher to redeem in the shop, against the ticket price paid.

You can check out all the information here. You can book tickets here.

2. Autumn wreath making

No autumn bucket list would be complete without an autumn wreath. I’ve spotted them on doors, especially during our drive to the seaside and I want one.

It’s something I’ve never thought of buying until this year, but with all the excitement over this year’s autumn season, I have to buy one. Read my blog post The things I love most about the upcoming autumn season for more details on the things I’m excited about.

If you don’t fancy buying one and are feeling creative, you can make your own – these are some of the events I found. You can book your wreath-making party at home here.

Alternatively, you can visit Hobbycraft for all the supplies you need to make one at home.

3. Halloween outfit for nursery

If possible, I want to go all out for our little one, as I would with our costumes. Read my blog post 4 times I rocked Halloween parties with my homemade costumes for more details on my obsession with customising costumes. I want to buy or create an outfit no other child will be wearing (not a competitive mother over here at all).

Check our Smiffy’s for all your costume needs.

4. Halloween events

A must on the autumn bucket list is planning Halloween events. We’ve looked at the scary events English Heritage has on in the past. You can find out more information about the events available here.

You can sign up for an English Heritage membership below.

I usually struggle to find suitable events, as Halloween isn’t celebrated in the UK, but I am happy with some of the events I’ve found and we will be booking a few of them:

Halloween food, drink & craft Fest at Howsham Hall, York – It looks like a great event and you can buy tickets here.

Mother Shipton’s Cave – the Halloween event looks like fun. You can find more information here and book tickets here.

Curious concoctions – kids’ outdoor Halloween party, Haddocks Wood, Runcorn – I love the idea of this outdoor event and kids making Halloween potions in the woods. It might be one for us to check out when our little one is a bit older. You can book tickets here.

September, when we start counting down the days until the colder mornings, buying Halloween costumes, putting up autumn decorations, planning where we will spend Halloween, what firework displays we will visit, bonfire night, then Christmas planning.

5. Markets

Markets are amazing all year round, but especially magical at the time of year and therefore make it onto the autumn bucket list.

Autumn-themed, a Christmas Market. I just love a good market, where you can buy a range of items you may never be able to find again. That’s the beauty of it.

These are the ones I’ve found:

Malton Food Market – This monthly event looks amazing and I can imagine all the yummy products on offer – the next one is Saturday 9 October 2021.

Living North Christmas Fair, York Racecourse – The Hubby & I visited this one a few years ago and we honestly had a blast! Everything is expensive on the day, but we came away with flavoured vodka, chocolate, premium cheese, and house decor – a perfect day of indulgence and I am so glad we went before having kids, haha!

Christmas craft & food market, Rise Hall, Hull – This looks like a lovely day out and it might be something we check out this year. It will be nice to walk around freely without restrictions like we’ve had the last two years.

Sheffield Christmas markets – We visited the market as a couple several years back and stayed in a beautiful hotel for the night. It was magical to walk around the city centre, wrapped up, with our mulled wine. I remember purchasing Christmas presents for everyone and tree decorations. Where do I book?? All the information you need is in the link above and they are also taking trade inquiries at the moment.

Final thoughts

What activities are on your autumn bucket list and what days out do you have planned in the lead-up to Christmas? I would love to hear about any events you are attending below

4 times I rocked Halloween parties with my homemade costumes

Before the autumn season gets into full swing, I need to admit publicly, Halloween is my fave occasion.

And I LOVE making homemade costumes for the main event…

We have storage boxes full of decorations. I’m so excited we now have a toddler who understands the occasion more, which means she can get involved.

I wish I lived in the US because I want in on the over-the-top celebrations. Everyone is out on the street, dressed up, interacting. We are a little more reserved here in the UK.

4 times i rocked Halloween parties with my homemade costumes

Maybe it’s because I repeatedly watched The Witches over & over at my Grandma’s house when I was little, or loved the iconic Halloween scene in ET (US friends, please tell me trick or treat night really is like this??), or because I am a little witchy myself. I just feel like this occasion was meant for me.

In my excitement for the upcoming celebrations and my participation in #Blogtober, I had to share some of the trusted Halloween outfits I’ve made myself for our Halloween parties in previous years.

Disclaimer – for each of these outfits, I bought the basics and then adapted the outfit . ‘homemade’ is a bit of a stretch, haha!

I also apologise in advance for the puns. Sorry, not sorry!

Witch please, lets dive in…

1. Day of the dead theme

I love this theme. Having taken part in a fiesta when we holidayed in Mexico, this theme is amazing and really gets the party vibe going.

One year we went all out with fancy dress, bought face paint and all the accessories. We had matching decorations and I even did some baking to fit in with the theme. Our guests followed our lead and their costumes were also amazing.

My hubby even let me do his makeup. We had a great evening.

There is something about dressing up which makes the event more fun. I talk more about the joy of fancy dress in this blog post.

Are you ready to make your Day of the Dead outfit?

day of the dead outfit

The tools you need to create this outfit…

These are the best face paints. I used them in my party days, when dressing up and going out for too many hours was a weekly thing (just the thought of it now makes me tired!)

The colours are great and they never left me with a rash or bad skin afterwards.

I still have my headband in the storage box and I really want to dig it out now. If nothing else, the little one would love dressing up.

I don’t know if I want to let her loose on my precious Halloween boxes though!

I love the look of this and want to add it to my day of the dead outfit. I am currently checking out events where I can wear the outfit this year, when I should be writing for the blog, haha!

This is just one of the dresses I found, but there are so many more, depending on what you’re confident enough to wear!

I still wonder how the wedding dress ended up in the charity shop: did someone get divorced, are they still happily married, just having a clear-out. Anyway, it’s now in our storage cupboard covered in blood and black makeup.

This is an additional accessory and it will bring your outfit to life (pun intended)

I have a few more accessories below which will look great…

Do you have any homemade costume ideas? Share them with me below…

2. Zombie nurse

Every time I looked for an outfit in this category, I wasn’t impressed with the ready-to-buy outfits online and therefore I decided to buy the basics and make my own.

Halloween nurse in jail

The tools you need to create this outfit…

You need a plain nurses outfit, then it’s time to start creating and make it your own! Adapting it for Halloween is fun…

You will need the following to make it your own…

I created my own version of this one. Think more blood, accessories, the wig above, and some creative face paint.

You can then add shoes, tights, fake glasses. Anything you want!

3. Zombie escape convict

I bought the basic outfit, covered it in blood (fun times), and added some of the accessories below.

The wig was my favourite addition to this outfit.

I also used face paints to create a scary look.

I remember this night well. I also wore red high heels and couldn’t walk by the end of the night!

See my Pinterest board for more ideas

4. Halloween bride

Don’t judge, but I once bought an 80’s style Halloween dress from a charity shop and spent an evening, when I lived alone, cutting it up and covering it in blood.

It was probably a result of all the pent-up man-hating, because I stupidly tolerated players back in the day! haha!

I still wonder how the wedding dress ended up in the charity shop: did someone get divorced, are they still happily married, just having a clear-out. Anyway, it’s now in our storage cupboard covered in blood and black makeup.

Halloween costumes bridge and groom

The tools you need to create this outfit…

As well as shredding most of the material on the dress, I also pinned the front up and added tights, to give the full Halloween look.

I used fake blood and black face paint to create a dirty, disheveled effect. Think nightmare-zombie bride. Wedding gone horribly wrong!

These are the tools you need…

I was ambitious with this outfit and made it for the Rocky Horror picture show. When we went out in Liverpool straight after the show, I don’t think people understood the concept. It was a great outfit, but I could have chosen a better audience for it. Maybe I will dig it out and find somewhere to wear it again… Hmm

What do you think?

There are so many other outfits you can create. This article is helpful. Cosmopolitan also has a great article on easy-to-make outfits.

From a purely cost-saving perspective, I love buying the basics and adding my own touch to the finished product. I want to make something unique, that nobody else will be wearing.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post. For anyone who is really interested in all things spooky and wants a quick stop tour of the history of Halloween. Here it is.

Witching you a Happy Halloween

From your ghostest with the mostest. If you’re such a haunt mess with your outfit ideas for Halloween, I hope this article has given you some ideas for total squad ghouls dressing up vibes.

I will stop with the puns now…

Please comment below if you liked these ideas or you have any others to share. I would love to hear from you.

I’m participating in Blogtober – here are 4 reasons I’m thrilled about it

I think I’ve previously mentioned, I don’t do anything by halves. It’s all or nothing with me. That’s why I’m participating in Blogtober.

I started the blog on 15 August 2021 and decided I would absolutely be doing Blogtober as soon as I heard about it on Twitter. I love a challenge, so why not? There is also the small issue of trying to get my blog out there, rank, spread a message, become more popular – surely posting throughout October will help with this.

If you don’t know what Blogtober is, you can read more about it here.

Mental Health Awareness Day

As the main topic of my blog is mental health, the lead-up to Mental Health Awareness day is a perfect time for me to share mental health-related posts during the week Monday 4th – Sunday 10th October.

You can read more about why I started a mental health blog in this post.

Will you be writing about mental health during October 2021? Let me know in the comments below.

When you’re passionate about something, you excel at it. It doesn’t feel like hard work!

#Blogtober – LET’s GO!!!

I am so excited to be participating in Blogtober, on the first day of October I needed to share my excitement.

Halloween is my favourite occasion and we do something to celebrate each year. You can read more about my DIY Halloween costumes below. This year I am super excited for autumn and I am focusing on the lead-up to Halloween, celebrating the small things. You can read more in my blog posts below:

All about autumn

In true celebratory style, these are the reasons I am participating...

  1. Making connections

Out of all my social media platforms, I’ve had the most success on Twitter and I genuinely look forward to opening the app each morning, simply because the blogging community is so supportive and kind to one another. Check out my about me page, for the low down on my story leading up to starting a blog.

  1. I have LOADS of content

Like other bloggers, I have so many half-written blog posts. I usually get inspiration in the early hours of the morning and have to record my thoughts. This then turns into a blog post, but I like to get the writing bit done first.

Before I bought hosting or started my research on blogging, I was writing and recording titles for blog posts on a spreadsheet. I knew what I wanted to write, but I just didn’t have the time to write the posts in full yet.

Blogtober is the perfect opportunity to force me to organise these posts and it’s exactly what I’ve done. Why not spend a full month posting blogs, when they are pretty much ready to share with the world??

I'm thrilled
  1. I love a challenge

I’ve mentioned this above, but I need to open up to you a little more about the reality of my personality. I am driven, determined, and stubborn. I was born this way. It’s usually what causes my high anxiety levels, but it also has its benefits. I am a hard worker and given my recent circumstances (mental breakdown, impending redundancy), I am determined to carve out the life I want to live. Hard work, determination, manifesting the future I want. What better opportunity to totally make this happen than Blogtober. You can read more about how I motivate myself in this post, 8 questions I’m asking myself in preparation for gratitude day.

Let’s do this!!

  1. It’s what I love

When you’re passionate about something, you excel at it. It doesn’t feel like hard work!

I’ve always loved writing, it’s how I communicate best and I use this medium to express myself. Why not do a whole crazy month of expressing myself. It’s like a dream come true.

Yes, I will be busy! But I will also be doing something I absolutely love each day and this makes me smile.

I am not ready to stop talking about Halloween

I know everyone is talking about Christmas, but I’m not ready to let go of Halloween just yet. Can we keep talking about Halloween?

One last look back at the fun we had before I put the decorations away until next year.

I had big ambitions for Halloween this year. As part of the blogging community, I loved the build-up of autumn-related content and the excitement of the impending spooky season.

But parenting wears you down. I no longer have the energy to preplan Halloween parties and make Halloween-themed food. I wish I did. Maybe next year…

Despite the lack of proper planning or big extravagant celebrations, we did have a lovely family celebration, and to be honest, I loved it more than the big parties. Maybe it’s just our life now. With a toddler running around, there are only limited activities available and she is still a little young to fully participate in everything Halloween has to offer.

A look back at our pumpkin adventure and Halloween activities

Pumpkin picking then decorations

As with everything in parenting, Halloween was a fun last-minute celebration for us.

Following an afternoon of pumpkin picking, we were truly in the Halloween spirit and very excited to carve our pumpkins.

A visit from my family made us even more excited.

Our celebrations were then completely unplanned. We proceeded to get the Halloween decorations out of storage and our little one loved rooting through them.

We put Halloween songs on Alexa, danced around, tried on outfits. We put a few decorations up and then of course we had to watch Ghostbusters. And introduce our little one to the Slimer Teddy we’ve had for years.

It was a fun night.

Our usual fun night out with family

The following night was spent with my parents. After a few drinks, our little girl dressed in her Halloween outfit with Tutu. We had a walk to the shop to fill her bucket with treats. And then an impromptu meal out, all celebrating together.

A wonderful evening.

HALLOWEEN!!

Sunday was a chilled day, in the afternoon we carved our pumpkins.

talking about Halloween

My hubby did a fab job and we let our little deocrate the smaller ones. This year we managed to pick up some small quirky ones. I’ve honestly never seen any pumpkins like this before and they add to the decoration in the living room.

Final thoughts

Can we all just agree to treat Halloween like Christmas from now on please? Leave our decorations up, talk about the aftermath, and don’t be so eager to get to Christmas yet. Thank you in advance.

Let me know how you celebrated Halloween in the comments below. Let’s keep the spooky season alive for another, final moment.

I would love to hear from you.

Until next year, fellow Halloween lovers.
